Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the striking clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster;[1] the name is frequently extended to also refer to the clock and the clock tower.[2] The official name of the tower in which Big Ben is located was originally the Clock Tower; it was renamed Elizabeth Towerin 2012 to mark the Dimond Jubilee of Elizabeth II Queen of the United Kingdom.

HALLOWEEN IN UK BRITAIN

Halloween is now celebrated across the world on the night of 31st October. Modern day celebrations generally involve groups of children dressed in scary costumes roaming from house to house, demanding “trick-or-treat”. Fearing the worst, intimidated householders normally give much chocolate, sweets and candy to avoid whatever tricks by these little miscreants.

Halloween colours are orange and black. Orange is related to harvests because the end of October is the end of the harvest. Black is related to death.

The adults who celebrate Halloween in Britain mainly like to wear the costumes of a vampire, a witch, a ghost, an angel and a nurse. Children mostly wear the costumes of Disney princesses, pirates, spiders, and Batman. The easiest halloween costumes are the ghost one and the witch one, cuz you can make it by yourself at home. You can make the ghost costume from an old white sheet or wear black clothes to look like a witch.

People in Sheffield, at the end of October can go to Fright Night. They say it’s ‘Britain’s Biggest Halloween Party’ and it attracts about 40,000 people each year. There are activities for kids, teenagers and adults including a fancy dress catwalk, zombie garden, traditional apple bobbing and a competition for the best pumpkin lantern. If you don’t have a big Halloween party in your area, some people have parties at home or at youth clubs where they dress up and play scary games or tell ghost stories.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL WEB-SITE

To be honest I’m not spending too much time there, but I think it’s useful, because we can read some articles by our teachers and know what students do. Interesting material from the students’ blogs comes to the main site and it is enriched every day. They can be tasks or creative work by students and teachers. We visit the website and do monthly Flash Mob tasks from different subjects and learn new things. Having an educational website is a great advantage. There are about 3000 students in the Educomplex and we have an opportunity to get to know each other through the website, reading each other’s materials. When students begin to talk about travel, we read it and make the impressed decision of where to go next. We have a media library and from our site we go to the media library website and read the online books we want. So we are being ifnormed about everything.

2. Read the text below about Alan Turing and watch the film The Imitation Game

Alan Turing (1912-54) was a British mathematician who made history. Turing‘s remarkable life and the key role that he played in ending WWII is simply amazing.

He broke the German U-boat Enigma cipher in World War II. Turing’s vision went far beyond the war. Already in the 1930s he had defined the concept of the universal machine, which underpins the computer revolution.

Turing was a genius pioneer of early computing technology and his efforts saved millions of lives by cracking the ‘impenetrable’ [ɪm’penɪtrəbl] German codes. Had he not become involved in the breaking of the codes, the war would have had a much different ending. The world was changed forever as a result of his efforts and success at breaking the German codes. Historians estimate that breaking Enigma shortened the war by more than two yearssaving over 14 million lives. It remained a government-held secret for more than 50 years. Turing’s work inspired generations of research into what scientists called “Turing Machines”. Today, we call them computers.”
